May 1992. Fujian Dongya Machinery Co., Ltd. was established. A blueprint for independent research and development, technological innovation, and economic construction on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait began to unfold here…
In the early 1990s, China's manufacturing industry was facing significant challenges. Most domestic piston ring enterprises had outdated equipment, while foreign counterparts excelled in technology development, equipment, quality control, and production management. At that time, Japan had already developed steel rings with minimal cutting precision machining, advanced surface treatment, and energy-saving, low-consumption characteristics. However, importing foreign equipment required a large amount of foreign exchange, making it prohibitively expensive for many enterprises. If China could learn and apply foreign technological knowledge to develop cost-effective, high-quality domestic piston ring production equipment, it would not only be a lucrative business opportunity but also contribute to the technological upgrade of the domestic piston ring industry.
At that time, the original aspiration of Dongya was clear: we must develop specialized piston ring production equipment in China and create our own high-tech, high-value Dongya piston rings!
For a company to grow, technological innovation is crucial, and talent is the key. Ultimately, business competition is a competition for talent. Dongya actively introduced technical experts, established a technology team, sent personnel abroad for studies and technical exchanges, and diligently tackled technological challenges. The team remained humble, continuously innovating, and making the most of every opportunity to learn and master cutting-edge piston ring technology. Upholding the corporate spirit of "Pragmatism, Struggle, Innovation, and Unity," Dongya worked tirelessly to provide world-class piston ring processing equipment to domestic enterprises while also producing its own piston rings. This was not only a source of pride for Dongya but also for the people of Xianyou.
At that time, Xianyou had a weak industrial foundation and few employment opportunities. The establishment of Dongya created jobs for local residents and contributed to the local economy.
By extensively studying foreign advanced models and adapting to domestic conditions, Dongya successfully developed and produced 36 types of specialized piston ring equipment, including piston ring grinders, liquid sandblasters, and intelligent piston ring rotary chrome plating production lines. These products were widely used in over 60 manufacturers across 27 provinces and cities in China, filling a domestic gap, replacing imports, and saving substantial foreign exchange. In terms of variety, output, and sales, Fujian Dongya Machinery Co., Ltd. became the leader in China's piston ring equipment industry.
In September 1993, the first national conference on the automotive piston ring industry was held in Xianyou, marking a milestone event. At the time, Fujian Provincial Party Secretary Chen Guangyi and Governor Jia Qinglin visited Dongya for research and provided tremendous support and recognition!
Piston rings are key components of an engine. The piston ring project was once listed as one of the 25 key automotive and motorcycle parts supported by the state. Traditional piston rings are made of cast iron through turning and machining. As modern high-performance engines develop towards higher speeds, higher compression ratios, and increased power output, piston rings are subjected to more demanding working conditions, higher operating temperatures, and greater stress. To reduce high-speed inertia forces and enhance engine performance, piston rings must be made lighter and thinner, with improved air-tightness at high speeds, better adherence to the cylinder wall, lower oil consumption, and a lower friction coefficient. To meet these demands, industrially advanced countries developed steel piston rings to replace traditional cast iron piston rings.
After China's reform and opening-up, steel piston rings and steel-banded combination oil rings were widely used in imported passenger car, mini-car, and motorcycle engines. During the localization process of vehicles and engines, piston rings became one of the most challenging components to manufacture domestically. Many automotive parts were successfully localized, yet piston rings still had to be entirely imported. Until the mid-1990s, China had not yet mastered the technology for manufacturing steel piston rings and high-quality steel-banded combination oil rings, resulting in extremely high prices for imported piston rings.
In the 1980s, China began introducing advanced automotive and motorcycle technologies from foreign industrialized nations, leading to a boom in joint ventures. By the 1990s, vehicles produced by these enterprises entered their maintenance periods, with piston ring wear being one of the primary issues. As sealing performance declined, exhaust pipes emitted blue smoke, polluting urban air. At the time, piston ring parts were particularly scarce, and a set of imported 462Q model piston rings cost as much as 300 to 400 yuan, yet they were difficult to procure. These piston rings were completely monopolized by foreign manufacturers.
"If foreigners can do it, why can't we Chinese do it?"
Thus, we at Dongya made a firm commitment: we must develop high-performance steel piston rings made by the Chinese! This is our patriotic spirit—we have unwavering faith and believe that Dongya will succeed!
The name "Dongya" has profound meaning. As Chinese, we were deeply outraged by the derogatory terms foreigners used to describe our people. How could "Dongya" ever be seen as the "sick man of Asia" in their eyes?!
"The mighty dragon of the East soars high, the lion of Asia rises with majesty!"
With great responsibility on our shoulders, Dongya must take flight. Time waits for no one, and Dongya must strive to catch up.
Piston rings are labor-intensive and technology-intensive products, requiring a high degree of specialization, advanced technology, and significant investment. We understand that piston rings are highly technical, high-tech products—both an opportunity and a challenge. Dongya is determined to position itself at the technological forefront, becoming the first company in China to develop high-tech, high-value-added, high-performance steel piston rings.
Finally, Dongya successfully developed a series of steel piston rings and related products! These products feature high strength, high hardness, lightweight design, and minimal or no cutting processing. Tests conducted by the provincial testing center confirmed that all technical performance indicators—such as elastic modulus, nitriding layer hardness, and nitriding layer depth—meet the same technical standards as those of advanced industrial nations. This technology filled a domestic gap, representing the highest level of piston ring manufacturing in China at the time. More importantly, steel gas rings and steel-banded combination oil rings comply with the national emission standards implemented for automobiles and motorcycles.
"Our piston rings are no inferior to Japan’s." As early as 1998, Chen Mingyi, then Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Party Committee, said during his visit to Dongya: "Your high-quality products have entered the international market, letting the world know that ‘Dongya’ is remarkable!"
With economic development, the requirements for piston rings in automotive engines have become increasingly stringent. As motorcycle and automobile production in China continues to grow year by year, piston rings—critical components at the heart of engines—are closely tied to the development of the automotive and motorcycle industries, thriving alongside them. The rapid expansion of the market has led to periods of high supply and demand.
Dongya is a private enterprise. It had no established brand advantage and no reliance on state-owned resources. Everything had to be built step by step, relying on independent innovation and mastering core technologies to secure a foothold in the highly competitive market.
In the 1990s, China's motorcycle market was booming. However, most motorcycle engines—the core of motorcycles—were imported from Japan, and even piston rings for repairs had to be sourced from Japan. These imports were not only exorbitantly expensive but also frequently out of stock. When would China produce its own piston rings? The only way forward was through technological innovation, upgrading technology, adopting high-end techniques, and promoting new technologies, processes, and materials to catch up with international standards.
Dongya took the path of introducing advanced equipment and instruments while prioritizing technological innovation and independent research and development. The company pursued a development strategy unique to Dongya. In recent years, by closely following international technological advancements and collaborating with domestic and international research institutions, Dongya has successfully developed internationally advanced products such as PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings. As a result, Dongya has become the preferred brand for leading domestic manufacturers of motorcycle, automobile, general-purpose engine, and air compressor engines. The company has also established itself as a primary supplier of piston rings for internationally renowned internal combustion engine manufacturers, earning widespread acclaim from domestic and international customers.
Dongya piston rings dominate the domestic motorcycle and general-purpose engine OEM markets and rank among the top suppliers in the domestic automobile OEM market. The company has become a key player in China's piston ring manufacturing industry. Several of Dongya’s independently developed projects have been recognized as National Torch Program projects and provincial regional development projects. The company has received six Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards and has led or participated in one industry standard and 17 national technical standards.
